DON BAKURI

DON BAKURI

Don Bakuri (12/1/1729 - 9/7/1807) was a Pharonian statesman and philosopher of Irish descent who spent most of his career in Pharos. Born in Dublin, Bakuri served as an MP in the Pharonian Parliament for almost 30 years with the Lyg Party and became Premier of the Dominion between 1782 and 1784. Bakuri's family moved to Pharos because of his mother's Catholicism. They resided in Newport and Don received his education in Mandras University. Although his father wanted him to become a lawyer, he studied history and philosophy. He entered politics in 1765 winning a by-election in Newport. After Bakuri delivered his maiden speech, Premier Anville Lee said he had "spoken in such a manner as to stop the mouths of all Europe" and that the Lyg Party should congratulate itself on acquiring such a Member. His Parliamentary speeches about various issues such as free trade, the free market, the penal code, the anti-slave trade, the support of the American Revolution (his 6 resolutions proposal is famous), are considered masterpieces. After Koneski's resignation, Bakuri was appointed temporarily as Premier until the next General elections. Lyg won the 1782 mandate and Bakuri formed a minority government, that lasted for almost 3 years. Bakuri devoted most of his life in philosophy and writing. He published more than 25 works. In the 19th century he was praised by both conservatives and liberals. He never married.
