ESCEL VORIS

ESCEL VORIS

Escel Voris (24/12/1818 - 11/10/1889) was an ASO's Ers Orator in the late 1800's. He was born in 1818 in Nobel, the son of Bale Voris (1784–1858), a wealthy brewer, and his wife, Alina Press. Voris was tutored as a young man by the famous mathematician Robert Woodhouse and was strongly influenced by him. He was fascinated by mathematical analysis, and he and his brother experimented by giving test exams to each other. As an adult Voris managed the brewery but he was more interested in mathematical research. He was introduced into the ASO in 1865 and worked in mathematical psychohistory models. He was highly esteemed by his fellows and became Ers Orator in 1881. He stepped down in March 1889 due to ill health and died at home six months later. He was married to Amelia Grim (1820-1874) and had 3 children together.
