JAN VEISS

JAN VEISS

Jan Veiss (13/1/1864 - 30/8/1942) was a Pharonian politician and 4 times Premier of the Dominion, serving almost 14 years. He was born in St.Michiel,AUR and studied Economics at the South Aurora University College (SAUC). He was involved in politics from an early age as a member of the Auroran National Democratic Party. He was a member of the Pharos parliament in 1890 and became an NP leader in 1915, after Salvor Hardin's resignation. As a wartime Premier he imposed several unpopular measures, such as war taxes and the Military Service Act (conscription). He also co-signed the Anglo-Hinji Act recognizing the Hinji Independence after a bloody Hinji Autumn Rising. SPR was also handed over as a semi-American controlled region, after an agreement made during the war between USA and Britain. NP and Veiss lost the 1925 elections to the Social Democrats, but was again appointed Premier in 1926 for a short period of 3 months, after the Crown turned down Bruijn's trade tariff's legislation. In an unstable period for the politics in the island, he served 2 more times as Premier (1929-1930 and 1932-33). The Free State of Columbia also left the Dominion during his days.
