SHENET TERFEL

SHENET TERFEL

Shenet Terfel (11/5/1805 - 31/3/1891) was a diplomat and Premier of The Dominion between 1858 and 1862. He was born in Hilvar, the eldest son of Lord Lev Terfel, Earl of Hilvar and Lady Hana Spens. He was educated in Pharos and then he went to Paris, where he finished the Sorbonne University with a degree in Education. He returned to Pharos in 1836 and was elected to Parliament with the National Party for Hilvar. From 1853 he lead the conservatives as leader of the opposition. In 1858 the Party won the elections after 30 years of Lyg's domination and Terfel formed a minority government with the silent support of several individuals and smaller parties. In his four years as Premier he strengthened relations with European nations and was a prominent champion of the movement for the admission of women. During the American Civil War, Terfel was non-interventionist along with the majority of his cabinet. That proved to be a strong reason for Lyg Party's to intervene asking for stronger relations with the North (as secretly promoted by the ASO). Terfel lost the 1862 elections and resigned from the Party's presidency. He remained an MP for another 4 years and then served as Consul to France. His family owned coal and ironstone mines and was the principal shareholder of the Skelton Iron & Steel Co. In 1863 the company operated 8 blast furnaces and 97 puddling furnaces. He was married 3 times, having 3 children with his last wife Rosa.
